Balancing One-on-One with Group Socializing

Helping and guiding our children as they develop social skills is just one of the many challenges of parenting. Most of us want our children to have friends and an active social life, but we want to keep things in perspective too—and help our children learn how to keep things in balance. One area where we can help our children learn to maneuver in the social realm is in balancing out one-on-one friendships and social activities with group socializing. One-on-one socializing or establishing and maintaining those close and intimate friendships is an important part of life. It is also an … Continue reading

Where is our Fitness Blog Week in Review?

Unfortunately, the craziness this week precluded a lot of fitness articles to cover for the fitness blog. We did take a look at exercise styles, but this week just didn’t lend itself to focusing on fitness as much as I would like. What Did We Do? My daughter and I did two miles per day on our bikes. We also went out for a couple of long walks. They celebrated field day on Monday and water slide day on Wednesday. She came home from school pretty tired, but excited at the same time. We spent one afternoon planning what we’re … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: Ice Cream Social

Happy Mother’s Day everyone! This morning, we drove a couple hours roundtrip to my parent’s house, to make my Mom (and Dad) a big breakfast to celebrate the special day. I cooked up homemade pancakes on the griddle and sausage with real Maple Syrup (Shady Maple Farm Thick-n-Rich – it is delicious!) and topped it off with fresh French pane au chocolates and muffins from the bakery near our home. Being a cooking equipment snob, I packed up half my kitchen for this trip! Before we three exited at 8am, I had a toasted bagel with peanut butter on one … Continue reading

The Four Kinds of Walking

Did you know there were other kinds of walking? For most of us, walking is pretty self-explanatory. You put one foot in front of the other and that’s all there is to it. You wouldn’t be totally wrong because walking is walking, but there are different ways of performing your walking in a fitness scenario. So maybe calling them the four kinds of walking is a little misleading, when what they are is four different levels to the intensity of the walking that you do. The level of walking you chose to do will have an impact on your overall … Continue reading

‘Walking’ Marriages

So I was channel surfing this weekend and I came across a show on PBS that was talking about the Mosuo people of China. I’d never heard of them before, but what caught my interest was the statement about the matriarchal style of society that the Mosuo have. Apparently, the Mosuo people live in an area of the Himalayas around Lugu Lake in the Southern part of China. What makes this society so unique is that they are one of the world’s few remaining matriarchies. Among the Mosuo people, the women are in charge of all aspects of their society. … Continue reading

Walking Through a Minefield

People who are fostering children to adopt them get very wary of almost everyone that they have to deal with in the system. We had an adoption agency working on our behalf and I was very trusting of our assigned worker. We went to that agency solely because of her. She was very experienced and we relied on her extensively. I could not rely on the head of her agency though. If the agency was having a bad month financially, she would withhold funds that were intended for us to balance her books. Some payments were received several months late. … Continue reading

Some Teens are Having Bariatric Surgery

Teenagers who are obese might have the option of having bariatric surgery. Previously, this type of weight loss surgery was only offered to adults. Although it isn’t the best choice for every teenager, there are some teens who can greatly benefit from it. The New York Times reported in February of 2017 that the number of adolescents who are overweight or obese has leveled off in recent years. But the number who are severely obese – heavy enough to qualify for bariatric surgery – has nearly doubled from 1999 to 2014. Previously, 5.2 percent of adolescents were severely obese. That … Continue reading

Protecting Your Children from Online Scammers

We live in an age driven by technology. Children are more technologically advanced than ever before. My four year old is no exception. He can work an Ipad much better than I can. He knows how to get into all his favorite games, how to get to the Dinsey Channel, and just about anything else he sets his mind to. I think kids these days are just born that way. While technology can be an amazing educational tool for our children, it can also be a very dangerous place, as we all know. More and more predators are out there … Continue reading
