Great Blog for Workouts and Motivation

Have you heard of Peanut Butter Fingers? No, it isn’t a new treat on the market it is a blog about fitness. I recently became aware of this blog while looking for workout routines I could effectively do in my home. Most home workouts are on DVD’s or Netflix. After a while they get boring and you lack the motivation to pop in the DVD or switch over to Netflix. I wanted to find something with teeth and something to fight the boredom. On my search I found a few tips here and there but it was not until looking … Continue reading

Staying Active Despite Your Desk Job

If there is one detriment to maintaining an active lifestyle it is a desk job. Some people, me included, spend hours sitting in a chair staring at a computer screen. Apparently there are some offices who have found a way to work around this; workstations that fit over treadmills. What a great idea. The original concept of this came from a man who suffered a leg injury in 2008. Up until then he had been active. So he came up with what is called the “TrekDesk.” He was able to continue working, walk off 26 pounds, get better sleep and … Continue reading

The Benefits of Core Body Exercises

We have been looking at the benefits to different types of exercises. Today we will be talking about core body exercises, which focus on your abdomen going down to your lower torso. Although your abdominal muscles don’t contribute much to core stability, the reality is that any core muscle which isn’t conditioned or strengthened could increase the risk of injuries and discomfort. Strengthening your body overall is important to a fitness routine, so focusing on the core body should be part of it. Your core body includes your abdomen, hips and buttocks. One of the best types of exercise equipment … Continue reading

The Benefits of Stength Training

In today’s blog we are going to be looking at the benefits of strength training. This form of exercise is a combination of flexibility exercises and cardio. Although weights are a part of it, there is much more to it. One of the greatest benefits, physique-wise, is that strength training tones your body, adding definition to your muscles. Overall body strength is the focus. Strength training consists of movement and non-movement. For instance with movement, this is when you contract your muscles through a range of motion (an example would be weight training). Non-movement strength training is when you contract … Continue reading

Enjoying My Spinning Class

Today began week four of my six week summer spinning class. Spinning if you have not heard of it before is a form of indoor cycling. Similar to a stationary bike, but designed very specifically for intense, cardio rides where you can actually go from a seated position to a standing position (while still spinning). A great feature on spinning bikes is they have a knob that allows you to add resistance. I really enjoy spinning class for a lot of reasons. The main reason is that it is a great cardio workout. We spin for about 50 minutes and … Continue reading

Toning Those Flabby Areas

In my quest to get healthy and lose some weight, I have been working on some new things. The latest is toning. I want to get rid of any “soft” areas of my body where they shouldn’t be soft. I have found some great toning exercises that really help. Think about some of the areas that we most want to tone. Start with the upper arms, which can be an area of flab for many. To do this exercise you will need a light weight, five pounds or less. Start with your right side by extending your right arm straight … Continue reading

Say So Long to Old-School Stretches

Your junior high school P.E. teacher had it all wrong. If you grew up in the 70s like I did you were likely taught the importance of warm-up exercises and how holding stretches for at least 20 seconds was essential. Well, time has moved on and now scientists maintain that some of those tried and true stretches you did in 7th grade are not only a waste of time but also are bad for you. According to researchers, the belief that holding a stretch for 20 to 30 seconds (known as static stretching) primes muscles for a workout is not … Continue reading
