Who says exercise has to be boring? Now that the weather is finally beginning to cooperate you can say goodbye to marathon sessions on your gym's treadmill and hello to the real deal. Road races hosted by popular U.S. cities give runners the chance to get in a bit of sightseeing while they pound the pavement to the finish line.

If you're looking to combine great views with an even better workout, then consider the following outstanding races:

CHICAGO MARATHON

I can't say enough about this fantastic race. It truly is the best way to tour the Windy City. The marathon starts and finishes at iconic Grant Park and weaves through nearly 30 of the city's most popular neighborhoods, including Chinatown and Little Italy. You also get an outstanding view of Lake Michigan and of the hundreds of thousands of spectators who cheer you on with cowbells and beer. Another bonus about this race is that it takes place in October, when the city is at its finest weather-wise.

TWIN CITIES MARATHON

The race starts in downtown Minneapolis and ends in front of the state capitol in St. Paul. Runners take the scenic route along several lakes, the banks of the Mississippi, and picturesque parks. What's more, the race is held in the October during peak fall foliage. The views are spectacular and the crowds are uplifting as well.

SAN FRANCISCO MARATHON

This summertime race loops through the city's well-known neighborhoods, then out and back on the Golden Gate Bridge. The views are incredible, provided the fog clears by mid-morning. The marathon also provides runners with access to parts of the city typically reserved for daredevil taxi drivers.

MIAMI MARATHON

This race traditionally takes place in winter, but it feels like summer to northerners. Runners take their mark before sunrise to take advantage of the cooler temperatures while they cross the causeway into South Beach. Race participants are also treated to views of Miami's most popular neighborhoods and of the dozens of cruise ships making their way in and out of port.
