Staying Ahead of Your New Year's Fitness Resolutions

If you are firmly resolving to get in shape in 2009, then why not get a head start on your promise by burning fat over the holidays? It's not as difficult as it might sound.

By following the tips below you can get fit (and be two steps ahead of your New Year's resolution) and still party like its 1999:

Create a Home Gym. It doesn't have to be expensive or elaborate; rather get creative with what you have. For example, crunches, push-ups, jumping jacks and many other exercises can be done without any gym equipment. Use this "home gym" during the times you can't make it to your actual fitness center.

Time Management. Make the most of the workout time you have. For example, if your hectic holiday schedule affords you just 20 minutes to exercise, then run for all 20 of those minutes instead of taking normal breaks to jog or walk.

Portion Control. Before you head out to a holiday shindig, consider portion control. Instead of eating five deviled eggs, nosh on two and then fill up on a few carrots from the veggie tray. Also, cut back on the number of alcoholic drinks you consume. Some beers and other fruity libations are loaded with calories. Plus, you won't need to designate a driver if you skip the booze all together.

Keep a Journal. Keeping track of what and how much you consumed during the holidays (in addition to how many minutes you worked out) will help you identify your trouble spots. If you don't record your nutrition, chances are you'll miss opportunities to modify your diet and shed unwanted pounds.

Don't Get Discouraged. If you fall off the exercise wagon during the holidays, don't get discouraged. There's no reason you can't still accomplish your New Year's goal once the holidays are over and you get back into your normal routine.
