Walking Across the USA

A survey from the American Podiatric Medical Association looked at five hundred cities around the United States and ranked them based on walkability. The researchers looked for things like green spaces for walking, what percentage of the population walks to work, how safe the streets are, and more. Here are some of the winners! I’m pleased to see my own new home of Portland, Oregon made the list, thanks to the efforts of the community to make the town more walkable. Other towns that are working to improve walkability include Trenton, NJ, Denver, CO, and Kansas City, MO. There are … Continue reading

Healthy Workout Tips

Regular exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Here are some tips to boost your energy, boost your calorie burn, and love your workouts more. Change your shoes. The usual advice on replacing your sneakers is to pick up a new pair every 400 miles or so. But if your activities aren’t measured in mileage, what do you do? Try to replace your sneakers after 150 hours of activity — that’s every five months if you wear your sneakers for an hour every day. They may still look new at that point, but the important internal cushioning may … Continue reading

Good For You, Good For The Earth

Want an extra feel-good boost for your workout? You can make choices that are beneficial for your community and the entire world! Do you know how many plastic water bottles get thrown out every day? Eighty million. That’s a LOT of water bottles — I have a hard time imagining eight hundred or eight thousand bottles… let alone 80 million! Rather than tossing your water bottle, stick it into a recycling bin. Better yet, reuse it yourself! You’ll save money and keep the bottles out of the trash. Skip the plastic water bottles entirely and switch to a refillable aluminum … Continue reading

Dear Heather …I’m Exhausted

Dear Heather, I’m exhausted. I confess, I don’t like exercising. I do it because I need to do it and because I read blogs like yours that promote all the wonderful things that exercise can do for you. I want exercise to do all those wonderful things for me. But I have four children, the youngest is turning a year old next month and the oldest is finishing up the fifth grade at the same time. My husband works and is often gone for 12 to 14 hours a day. I never stop moving, from the moment I get up … Continue reading

Spring Forward to Action 2007: Week 2, Day 5

TGIF! It’s been a very long week and I for one am grateful that it’s Friday. In retrospect, my workout was once again limited by other commitments. I worked as a sub in the library and I spent the day on my feet. I took my pedometer with m and I did a few circuits in the library while I was working. It doesn’t necessarily get the heart rate up, but it did keep me moving. Daily Goal My goal today was to hit 7500 steps whether I got my time on the treadmill or not. I managed to hit … Continue reading

The Four Kinds of Walking

Did you know there were other kinds of walking? For most of us, walking is pretty self-explanatory. You put one foot in front of the other and that’s all there is to it. You wouldn’t be totally wrong because walking is walking, but there are different ways of performing your walking in a fitness scenario. So maybe calling them the four kinds of walking is a little misleading, when what they are is four different levels to the intensity of the walking that you do. The level of walking you chose to do will have an impact on your overall … Continue reading

Planning Ahead – Want to Walk a Mile?

There are all kinds of reasons you may want to walk a mile. According to my grandmother, if you wanted to walk a mile then you should just put your shoes on and start walking. In this case, she’s not wrong. Walking is one of the easiest of the cardiovascular activities and can be performed by just about anyone, from the most sedentary individual to the most active. I like to tell people, if you can walk out your front door and get to the mailbox. You’re already making your first strides towards good exercise and good health. So you … Continue reading

Dear Heather … Beginning Walkers

Good morning, welcome to our latest Dear Heather and while this week it may be short, but sweet, I wanted to answer some questions, including questions I found on the forum boards. This is has been a crazy week here in the life, a week that bid goodbye to one old friend of mine and to bid farewell to another friend of my family, a very nice lady I’ve known since I was a kid. It definitely makes me think about the choices I make in life, reassess what I’ve done, what I want to do and where I want … Continue reading

Welcome to November – What are we going to do this month?

Good afternoon and welcome to our first post for November. I found myself slow and sluggish at my workout this morning, but that’s hardly surprising. The entire day has felt a bit slow and sluggish – recovering from a holiday does that to you. We enjoyed a great Halloween last evening and though we were done with trick or treating and home by 7:30 and the kiddo was in bed by 8 – I’m still wiped out. The Holiday Letdown Whether it’s Thanksgiving, Christmas or Halloween — holidays are packed with anticipation that slowly builds until the actual day arrives … Continue reading

10,000 Words & 10,000 Steps – A New Definition of Physical Education

I was reading about a new educational program being put into practice at a few schools on the West Coast and I think it’s a great idea. I already plan to write to my local school district and suggest it as an idea that could be implemented at our schools here. The program is referred to as 10,000 words; 10,000 steps. So what is 10,000 Words & 10,000 Steps? You may have heard of the 10,000 step program that encourages you to increase the number of steps that you take every day until you are walking on average of 10,000 … Continue reading
