What To Expect From The What To Expect Movie

If you are pregnant, there’s a good chance that you are aware that one of the most popular pregnancy books out there has been turned into a movie. “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” has helped many women (and men) to understand what goes on during pregnancy. I have read the book, and have found it to be a great resource that I referred to often during both of my pregnancies. When I heard that the book was headed for the big screen, I began to wonder how a movie about being pregnant would do in theaters. While I have … Continue reading

Identity Thief

Babies are a joy to be cherished. There is nothing like holding your baby for the first time. The first few days are precious and far too fleeting. I wish I had a time travel machine to go back to the newborn days of my children. On the other hand of the joy they bring is the feeling some moms feel that their identity has been stolen. One day you are you. People call you by your name. They ask how you are doing. You have goals and dreams. The next day you are so and so’s mom. Everyone begins … Continue reading

Marriage Lessons For Children

Sometimes I worry. Ok, most of the time I worry, but this is a specific worry. What am I, a divorced woman, teaching my daughter about marriage. I’ve been divorced since my daughter was ten. My ex husband and I made a point to never argue in front of our daughter, so she never got the chance to see us work things out either. I want my daughter to have a marriage that we all dream about so I trot out all the tired cliches: Marriage is a life long commitment. Anything worth having, including marriage, is worth working for. … Continue reading

Weddings: Putting All That Planning Into Perspective

I’m conducting an experiment. Want to be a part of it? I’m trying to figure out how important all that wedding preparation ends up being. I got the idea back when my mom moved in with us earlier this year. I had to clean out the closet in what became her room so she’d have a place to hang her clothes. I ended up finding several wedding-related items. My wedding dress was in there. I knew it was in one of the closets, but if you’d asked me which one I wouldn’t have been able to tell you. I also … Continue reading

Saying What Makes Them Feel Better (Not What Makes YOU Feel Better)

Communication can be such a big deal and when it comes to saying what needs to be said to our child or children, it can be tough to know what needs to be done. One area where we can get into trouble is when we say what makes us feel better or what we want to say, instead of taking into consideration what it is that will actually make our children feel better or will be helpful. I find that when I get into power struggles with my children I am most likely to say things that I will regret. … Continue reading

Author Interview: Steven Reilly, After the Championship

Today we are joined once again by Steven Reilly, assistant coach and author of the book “The Fat Lady Never Sings.” If you missed part one, click here. Steven, when we left off yesterday, you were telling us what happened to some of the key players after they won the championship. What about you? What did you do? After the 1995 season, I decided to move on and assisted at Emmett O’Brien Regional Technical High School in neighboring Ansonia. In 1997, I went to Seymour High to be an assistant coach with Bob Kelo where I continued to coach the … Continue reading

Just in Time for National Dog Bite Prevention Week 2007

Just a little while ago I read Aimee’s harrowing tale of her recent dog park outing with Moose and Lally. (See: You Should Have Seen the Other Guy?) What an appropriate (yet unfortunate) tale that emphasizes this week’s theme: National Dog Bite Prevention Week. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Each year, 800,000 Americans seek medical attention for dog bites; half of these are children.” Yikes. Even worse, about 386,000 who suffered injuries needed to go to the emergency room; about a dozen people died. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It … Continue reading

Best Buys for April

April is all about Spring. It is also about saving big on certain items, if you know what to go after. You’ll find sales and reduced prices on all of the following during the month of April. Sprucing up for Spring If you are like me, you have been opening up those windows and letting the fresh spring air breeze through your house. The lovely weather just makes me want to clean and freshen everything inside. The bright sunshine and tender green leaves outside of the window makes me notice those rooms that need painting. The good news is that … Continue reading

A Mall Worth Traveling To

Bloomington, Minnesota’s average annual temperature is about 45 degrees. But, it’s not the weather that draws millions to the area each year. Rather, visitors head to the Minneapolis suburb for another reason—the Mall of America. It was the biggest indoor mall in the country when it opened in 1992, but in the years since it has been eclipsed by shopping centers in Ohio and Pennsylvania respectively. Now it wants its top spot back. In previous blogs I’ve shared my budget-busting (yet thrilling) jaunts to the mall. I never tire of making the five hour drive from my home to hit … Continue reading

Christmas Must Come to an End – Even for Disney

Ok, I’ve done it. I’ve bitten the bullet and finally put down my foot with an authoritative hand and all the other associated clichés you can think of. The time has come to put the Disney Christmas videos and DVDs away until the Holiday season is upon us once more. It’s almost the end of February for goodness sake – you’d think the boys would be sick of watching Disney characters getting snowed in at the House of Mouse, or Donald’s nephews reliving Christmas Day over and over until they do it right, or even Minnie and Daisy having their … Continue reading
