Three Reasons to Get a Shopping Buddy

Grocery shopping presents new challenges in the third trimester. Walking up and down each aisle is a little more tiring that usual. Pelvic pain can make a shopping trip miserable. Reaching items on the top shelf or squatting down to pick up items off the bottom shelf becomes embarrassingly difficult. Lifting a case of water seems impossible. And just when you think you’ve gotten through the worst part, you arrive at the checkout and realize you can’t reach the items in the bottom of the cart because your belly is in the way! The solution? Enlist a shopping buddy. Call … Continue reading

Weight Loss: Accountability and the Buddy System

For most people losing weight is a challenge, a good challenge. For most of us it takes a lot of effort for those pounds to roll off. The main reason that so many of us fail at losing weight is due to inconsistency. We cannot maintain our willpower long enough to see any kind of significant results. When we do not see the pounds coming off we then become discouraged and fall off of the wagon, so to speak. In order to lose one pound of weight we have to decrease our caloric intake and increase our exercise burning capacity … Continue reading

Exercise Challenges: Big City, Little Income

Trying to find an affordable gym membership in a large city like Los Angeles, New York or Chicago can be more challenging than running a marathon in less than three hours. However, you shouldn’t let your fixed income discourage you from exercising; rather with a little creativity you can get in a decent workout without going broke. Here’s how: Look for Seasonal Rates. Select gyms offer reduced rates during certain times of the year. For example, a number of larger gyms (such as Gold’s and 24 Hour Fitness) waive their start up fees for new members at the beginning of … Continue reading

New Year’s Resolutions – A Family Challenge

Every adult has experience in failed New Year’s resolutions. I am going to quit smoking this year, I am going to knit a pair of mittens, I am going to stop writing all my blog posts while working at my real job (umm…) – no matter what it is that we had planned to do, by mid-January those dreams have been dashed by nasty combination of a lack of will, an overabundance of time commitments and by the uninvited visit from our best buddy, Captain Lazy Face. This year, in an effort to motivate yourself to begin a resolution and … Continue reading

How Can You Find a Diet Buddy?

Looking for a diet buddy? I mentioned that looking for one might be a thing to do in I Get By With a Little Help From My Friends earlier today. It occurred to me after making the suggestion that looking for a diet buddy may not be as easy as it sounds – so let’s explore a few ways that you can find a diet buddy. You can run an ad in your Church newsletter or post a request on your homeowner’s community message boards or join an online club. 52 Fitness Changes – Part 1

Imagine how different your life would be if you made 52 fitness changes. Of course, most of us cannot even imagine such a thing. It would be too much. But what if you broke that down? Instead of making 52 changes at one time, you made one change per week? Now that sounds a bit more doable, doesn’t it? Well that is going to be my challenge for you in the next five blogs. I am going to provide a breakdown of changes you can make each week. My suggestion is that you print these blogs, so you have them … Continue reading

Missed My Water Aerobics

Well my first day of water aerobics came and I could not go because wouldn’t you know it I had 2 kids home from school sick. Seriously this was the first time I had committed to exercise and it happens to fall on the same day my kids are home sick for the first time this year. It did not go over well with my new weight loss buddy I think she thought I was just trying to get out of it. The reality is I am actually looking forward to it. I am actually trying to get our weight … Continue reading

If you have other ways that you have found to secure additional work time for yourself, please feel free to share – I would love to hear about it. As a stay – … Continue reading

Adjusting Your Health and Fitness Plan

Lately I have been writing about my mid-year goals and the changes I have been making. Since my last blog my schedule has changed and I am going to make some adjustments. For my healthy eating goals I am still going to keep up my current plan of three fruits and three veggies a day. To do this I am going to buy my veggies once or twice a week. Then I will put them in those small reusable containers in the fridge already to go to take to work. For fruit I am going to have some bananas, melon, … Continue reading
