Be Flexible during the Busy Holiday Season

If there was ever a time in which busyness could become a good excuse for not exercising, it is certainly during the holidays. Most of us are working, taking care of families and trying to find time to make holiday preparations. I feel that stress of trying to get everything done. It is the middle of December and I don’t have all of my gift shopping done. I have yet to bake cookies and there are upcoming parties to attend, let alone planning out Christmas day in which I am hosting. But instead of using busyness during the holiday season … Continue reading

If the season’s ho, ho, ho and mistletoe has thrown off your fitness routine you are not alone. Ski Season Off to A Snowy Start

My friend in Kansas woke up to a foot of snow this morning. And now that powerful winter storm is taking aim at the Midwest and New England. Winter storm warnings and watches are currently in effect from Missouri across parts of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. According to the National Weather Service, up to 15 inches of snow is forecasted for sections of southern Michigan, with 10 inches possible in Detroit. While many travelers are dreading the onslaught of bad weather, skiers are rejoicing. I’ve dedicated quite a few blogs to the … Continue reading

Seasons Greetings from Santa Fe

Yesterday I received a Christmas card from a friend bearing that exact greeting. Little did she know that her holiday correspondence would serve as inspiration for a travel blog. As I stared at the card and the photos she included inside it made me wonder how much people know about New Mexico’s state capital. Sure, its popular ski resorts get a lot of press, but what about the other attractions the sunny city has to offer? If you have never visited Santa Fe then you might not know that it averages 300 days of sunshine a year, which means that … Continue reading

Early Season Ski Deals

In my previous blog I told you how I nearly dropped my toast when my daughter started shrieking about the snow that was falling outside our living room window this morning. For die-hard skiers I’m sure the sight brought tears to their eyes. (It did for me too, but not for the same reason.) As I mentioned earlier many ski resorts throughout the United States are already up and running for the season. And to entice skiers who are anxious to make the first tracks on the mountains, many resorts are offering early-season ski packages. Take a look at a … Continue reading

The World of Snow Skiing

Let me preface this blog with the information that I didn’t get to go skiing for the first time until I was about 26 years old. The first time I went, I was equal parts terrified and exhilarated. I had no idea what I was doing and we spent the fifty dollars to get me an hour ‘crash’ course lesson in downhill skiing. I didn’t like the name of it, but I quickly discovered that I loved the world of snow skiing. So What Kinds of Skiing is there? The first type of skiing that most people think of is … Continue reading

When Is My Child Old Enough to Go Skiing?

With so many areas seeing their first snows in the last few weeks, let’s answer a question that many parents have. When you love skiing and you enjoy skiing, you really want to share that joy and that love with your children. More often as not, we are confronted with the concern of when we can take our children out there to enjoy this great winter wonderland and the wonderful world of snow skiing. So, when is my child old enough? Kids are old enough by about the time they are two years old if they are coordinated, relatively fearless … Continue reading

The Season for Skiing

It snowed in several places this weekend. Snow – that complete and total sign of winter arriving and where there is snow – there is skiing. Skiing is one of the best forms of aerobic exercise and no matter how cold it is outside, one of the things I remember most about skiing is that you can actually get hot on a 4 degree day as you plow your way downhill whether it’s a green, a blue or a black. (Admittedly, I’m a bit of a coward, I prefer the greens – the blues are just too steep for me … Continue reading

Holiday Travel: Don’t Procrastinate

The big takeaway from travel experts this holiday season: Don’t procrastinate. This year, more than ever before, experts are advising to make a plan and act on it now, especially if you are looking to book a bargain. Christmas may still be more than a month away, but if you want to secure a spot on a plane, train or at a popular resort, now is the time to make your reservation. Most hotels have strict deadlines for their holiday specials, and the dates seem to get earlier and earlier each year. For example, this year, Beaver Creek Resort in … Continue reading
