Christian Perspective: Is Yoga a Conflict?

Yoga is a controversial issue among Christians. Some say it is simply a form of exercise while others say it is a physical representation of worship to another god. As an exercise separated from the roots of its spiritual beginnings there should be nothing wrong with the poses. However, many say the separation of spirituality and exercise is not possible based on what yoga means. Since yoga is thought of as just another aerobics class many have laughed at the idea that yoga could somehow conflict with their spiritual beliefs. It would be like saying a treadmill conflicts with your … Continue reading

Benefits of Yoga

Welcome to the new Yoga Blog. Discussing the benefits of yoga seems like as good a place as any to start. There are numerous benefits to yoga and I wasn’t’ aware of most of them when I started. Reasons for choosing yoga vary, but for me, I started because I hate all other forms of exercise. Seriously. Yoga has been around for a long time. Depending on the source, it is between 4,000 and 26,000 years old. Either way, it’s a long time, and there are many good reasons the practice has survived this long. Here are some of the … Continue reading

Yoga at Any Age

The next time you brush off an invitation to attend a yoga class because you think you’re too old to twist your body into a pretzel, think about Bette Calman. The Australian yoga instructor is 83 years old and is able to contort her body into positions that people more than half her age would have difficulty executing. London’s Daily Mail recently featured the flexible grandma in a multi-page spread. And boy, can this lady spread her limbs. At an age when most people are retiring to their rocking chairs, Calman is bending over backwards, striking challenging “lotus” poses and … Continue reading

The Fitness Blog Week in Review for February 3 – 9

Good morning and welcome to Saturday. Whew, am I glad it’s the end of the week! I’m tired. There are a lot of things going on in my life right now, some good, some great and some that are not as bad as they could be. I found out more about my own health condition this week and I scheduled my surgery. I also started substitute teaching in my school district this week and that was a tremendous lot of fun! We’ve managed to pack so much into this week and next week and the week after, that I am … Continue reading

The Yoga Path: Finding My Headstand

After going to my Level 3 YogaFit Training, I was determined to work my way into a headstand away from the wall. Reading Light on Yoga by B.K.S. Iyengar and talking to students and other teachers of yoga, I realized that I would need to be patient with myself and not rush it. I had heard that using a corner, rather than just being up against the wall, would encourage proper alignment. I didn’t try it in a corner for several months after my Level 3 training, however, perhaps because of being stubborn. It wasn’t until I had a more … Continue reading

The Yoga Path – Confidence

I recently wrote about how yoga has changed my life. In that same article, I promised to share more of this journey with you. Self-esteem has been an issue throughout my life. I wasn’t the most joyful teenager in high school and as a young adult I was often dipping into bouts of depression. I’ve slowly learned that one must accept the self on the outside by finding peace on the inside. Other forms of exercise besides yoga are easily capable of contributing to a healthy mind and body esteem; however, yoga has worked best for me. I believe that … Continue reading

January for a Yoga Teacher

The past month has been a whirlwind of teaching for me. I believe that I’m on seven days in a row of teaching at least one class a day. Don’t get me wrong – I find my work very satisfying. It is wonderful to find something that I enjoy doing and that helps other people become healthier and maybe even happier. However, my sleep schedule is really what reveals that my body is trying to catch up. By 9:30 every night (except for “24” night) my eyes are involuntarily shutting. I know what some of you are thinking – you’re … Continue reading

Yoga for Tweens and Teens

If you think about it our tweens and teens hardly ever enjoy relaxing moments that don’t revolve around T.V. or the computer. Their lives are infused with competitive activities, whether academic or sports related. They’re also programmed to compare themselves to everyone around them. In my experience of teaching yoga to this range of kids, I have found that many of them really enjoy stepping out of their regular activities to try it. I’m not going to say that every young person who I ever have taught ran up ranting and raving afterward, but when you see forty middle-schoolers in … Continue reading

The Fitness Blog Week in Review for Jan 6-Jan 12

Good morning, it’s a soggy Saturday here. It started raining yesterday and it’s been quite drenching. They are worried about freezing temperatures and there’s every chance we’ll have freezing rain and ice storms today so I have a feeling we’ll be fairly housebound for the weekend. That’s all right; we’ve plenty to do to amuse ourselves. Our daughter got Dance, Dance Revolution for Christmas and it’s time she and I spent some time together dancing our little tushies off. But before we dive into that, here is our Fitness Blog week in review. Saturday, January 6 Personal Fitness Challenge – … Continue reading
