Exercise for the Breast Cancer Survivor

It is “Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” so let’s focus on the benefits of exercise. Studies have shown that there is a reduction in mortality and recurrence for those who participate in regular exercise. The problem is that despite this, too many breast cancer patients don’t keep active. Sometimes it is for physical reasons, the toll of treatment on the body and feeling tired. Other times it is emotional, just not having the motivation to get moving. This is where supervised exercise programs can help, which many hospitals and medical centers offer. The problem is that once the program has ended, … Continue reading

Exercise Helps Back Pain

Lately, I’ve had a lot of trouble with lower back pain. It isn’t something that started suddenly. I remember the first time I really felt like I hurt my back. I was 42 and bending over the bed to change my baby’s diaper. Yes, I realize having a baby at 41 probably put enough strain on my back alone. Anyhow, I bent over and something went kapow and I could hardly stand up. I walked funny for about a week until it cleared up. Just from bending over! (The copyright holder of this work released this work into the public … Continue reading

Exercise During Pregnancy

Everyone knows that exercise during pregnancy is a good thing, if your prenatal care provider feels that you are healthy enough to exercise. Of course, when you are pregnant, exercising may not be something that you feel like doing much of the time especially if you feel nauseous or tired. I have been pregnant twice, and the first time around I did not exercise very much. The second time, I exercised regularly from the time that I discovered that I was pregnant until a week before my son was born, when my midwives decided that it was not safe for … Continue reading

I Must Exercise

In the hustle and bustle of my busy life sometimes I forget to take care of myself. Everyday it seems like my to do list gets longer and longer and time for me gets pushed farther and farther to the bottom. Winter is especially hard, I get a little depressed in the winter, nothing bad, just a little SAD (seasonal affective disorder) but one major downside is that I get very lazy. Everything becomes just too much work. My house falls apart, I don’t cook and I certainly don’t exercise. All I want to do is lay on the couch … Continue reading

Too Many Resolutions

Here we go again. I start the year with the very best intentions, my resolutions are written down, my goals firmly stated, I even have a dream board so that everyday my goals are visible. The only problem is that I am still delusional enough to think I can do it all. Every year I make the same resolutions, every year I try really hard, every year I go gangbusters for a few days, and then I burn out. There are so many things I want to get done and somehow the prospect of a new year makes me think … Continue reading

Realistic Exercise Goals

A key element to weight loss is exercise. It’s a lesson I learned early on in my journey to a better body. I can make all the changes I want to my eating habits; however, unless I add exercise, it won’t do me much good. So I decided that this is the year, the month, the week, to begin exercising. If you are anything like me, then you usually start off all gung-ho, ready to make changes, and then a week later you lose the motivation. I find that so frustrating about myself! However, I think I discovered the real … Continue reading

Excuses for Not Exercising: #2 I Am Just Too Tired

“I am just too tired to exercise” is something that I can really relate to, but then I have to remind myself that I will actually have more energy in the end. A typical day in the average American woman’s life: Crawl out of bed and attempt to put yourself together to look presentable for the day. Get the kids up, dressed, fed, organized for their day and try to manage to not get dirty or sweaty yourself in the process (this is extremely tough).Shuffle the kids to school or day care. Go to work and deal with unreasonable and … Continue reading

Survey Says: Dog Walking Better Exercise than the Gym!

One of my pet-centric newsletters arrived today, with the news that people who walk their dogs regularly end up working out more per week than people who own a gym membership. Five thousand folks in the United Kingdom (three thousand of them pet owners) responded to a survey sponsored by U.K. manufacturer Bob Martin Petcare. More than half of the survey participants said that dog walking was their main form of exercise — that makes sense, since more than half of the survey participants are dog owners! The average dog owner in the survey walked their dogs twice per day … Continue reading

When It Gets Too Much

Having a new baby is intense. Especially when it’s your first child, there’s a need there that you’ve never experienced before. You’re needed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with no end in sight. In the beginning, when you’re recovering from birth, you are very tired. You may be learning how to nurse your baby, and this may or may not go smoothly. It can be a challenge to survive these first weeks of your baby’s life. How can you set up a system to catch you when it feels like too much to handle? • Ask people … Continue reading

More Proof that Exercise Helps You Sleep

This message couldn’t come at a better time for me: I’ve been having a hard time falling asleep. Bedtime comes and I’m tired (or so I think) — but then I sit there staring at the ceiling for a good hour before shuffling off to snoozeland. Maybe more exercise is the answer. It certainly works for kids. A new study from the University of Auckland in New Zealand found that the more activity kids get, the faster they fall asleep at night. And the converse is true, too: the more sedentary a child is, the longer it takes them to … Continue reading
