In an earlier article, we talked about the Top Ten Best Fitness Gifts You Can Give Yourself, let's talk about the best fitness goals you can set for yourself as we approach the new year and a time for new year's resolutions - this might help you clarify the resolutions you want to set for yourself and build your resolution plan. Don't worry if you're not sure what a resolution plan is, we're going to talk more about that here over the next week as January 1st approaches.

In the meanwhile, here are the top ten best fitness goals you can set for yourself - at least in my humble opinion.

  • Build a Fitness Plan - You might have thought I would say exercise more, but exercising more doesn't do you any good if you don't have a game plan in mind for getting fit and getting more exercise. So settle on a fitness plan whether it's a The Firm, Curves for Women or building a workout with a personal trainer
  • Include a nutrition component in your Fitness plan - Don't just plan to exercise more or workout more and not think about what you're eating, nutrition is a vital part of any fitness goal you set for yourself, so make it a goal to eat healthier and make better health a goal
  • Break Old Habits - Whether it's an addiction to chocolate, sweets, alcohol or cigarettes, make 2007 the year you break those old habits and build new ones. I've shared some of the details of trying to quit smoking before and while I fell off the wagon, it remains a goal and I learn something new every time I fail, so be a quitter in 2007 and quit the bad habits
  • Lose weight - Setting a goal for losing weight is a worthy one, but make a target, whether it's losing 3 lbs per month or 1 lb per week - make the goal specific and not ambiguous
  • 10,000 Steps a Day - A fitness plan that incorporates increasing your steps every day is a great way to get started on a fitness plan without overwhelming you
  • Be More Optimistic - I'm as pessimistic as the next person, but developing your optimism can give you a better outlook on life and seeing the glass as half full can keep you positive
  • Commit to spending more time with your family - Your family is a support structure and provides you with an emotional buffer against the rest of the world, embrace them and make more time for them
  • Commit to your community - being active in some manner where your community is concerned is a great way to improve your outlook as well as to improve your community - and that benefits yourself and your children
  • Get a physical - getting in shape and getting healthier also means taking care of your body inside and out. If you haven't had a general physical in the last year, get one and keep a finger on the pulse of your health
  • Spend time with your spouse or your significant other - too often in our efforts to take care of all the people in our lives, we forget to take care of our own heart and spending quality time with those that love us remind us to love ourselves and to take care of ourselves

What goals do you have for 2007?
