Creating a Fitness Journal – Part 1

Sometimes we need to see things in black and white. This way we can’t deny the truth, whether it is the amount of exercise we are getting or the types of foods that we are eating. If you really want to be successful in developing and maintaining a fit lifestyle, I strongly suggest putting together a fitness journal. You can make this as simple or as fancy as you like. You can use a spiral notebook, your computer, a binder, whatever works best for you. Before you put together a fitness journal however, we need to think about the key … Continue reading

Fitness Can Be Fun

When you think of the word “fitness,” what adjectives come to mind? Boring? Tedious? What about fun? Is that a word you link to fitness? Not many people do but the truth is that fitness really can be fun. The problem is that we put fitness in a box. We look at it in one way, nothing more than exercise. But exercise doesn’t have to be a daily regiment that becomes drudgery. There are so many ways to exercise and not even realize you are doing it because it’s so much fun. Think of all the new fitness classes that … Continue reading

Start a Family Fitness Challenge

I turned on my Wii Fit Plus this morning and went right to the plaza. This is where everyone’s characters are housed until you select your character and start using the system. It was a sad sight before my eyes. All of my family’s characters were standing up and sleeping. Their heads were hanging down, arms were drooped and you could see “Zzzz” coming from each one. A part of me thought it was funny and a part of me thought it was sad. Our characters had not been using the system recently, some longer than others, so they had … Continue reading

Maintaining Fitness Routine On Vacation

Last week my family took a trip to Washington D.C. One of the things that concerned me was having my fitness routine disrupted. I know that vacations can really set you back. One of the important things that you need to remember when taking a vacation is that the same rules apply. If you eat healthy at home you should eat healthy on vacation. If you exercise at home you should exercise on vacation. It may take some creativity to do this but for the most part, I believe it is possible. I would love to say that I followed … Continue reading

The Truth Sometimes Hurts

The truth really can hurt. I have been learning this with my new Wii Fit Plus game. I turn it on and my little animated Balance Board is quick to tell me if I haven’t been on it for a few days. Okay, like I really need that reminder. There are also some exercise routines that I’m not so good at. It’s usually an issue of being uncoordinated. I will sometimes hear, “You didn’t even break a sweat, did you?” Or my trainer will tell me that I am very unbalanced. The worst is when I take my body test. … Continue reading

Brain Fitness

Did you know that you can exercise your brain? Too often people are so focused on body fitness that they fail to recognize the importance of brain fitness. Keeping your brain fit is just as important. Many people think that your brain stops developing at some point. But the truth is that it continues to adapt and rewire itself, even as you get older. Although mental decline can be caused by disease, if there is a decrease in memory or motor skills, this is usually due to a lack of brain stimulation. If you fail to use your brain, your … Continue reading

Children’s Fitness in Winter

Winter is in full swing and so that makes for indoor recess a lot of times with my children. When they come home, the first thing they want to do is turn on the television or sit in front of a computer or video game. Oh how I miss those carefree days of summer when they were constantly outside riding bikes, jumping on the trampoline or taking a swim. Even in fall and spring they were outside running around. But now we are stuck inside and they are losing the motivation to do anything physical. Since I started my treadmill … Continue reading

Creating an Affordable Fitness Plan

Many people think that fitness plans must feature frequent trips to the gym or a major investment in expensive exercise equipment in order for them to be successful. The truth is you can get all the benefits of calorie-burning exercises without stepping foot into a fancy fitness center. The key is to be creative when designing an exercise plan. Here are some ways you can shed pounds without going broke: Make a commitment to losing weight and stick with it—-no matter how tired you might be. Debunking Fitness Myths

I always wonder about those sweaty guys I see in the gym who do dozens of crunches, then stroll over to the vending machine to down a bottle of Mountain Dew. Unless that’s the only high calorie beverage they consume all day, I would think they would be better off drinking a bottle of water. That is if they ever want to see the six-pack abs they are trying to create via the crunches. Crunches won’t get rid of body fat. That’s one of the biggest fitness myths out there. The only way you are going to be able to … Continue reading

How to Find a Fitness Partner

We’ve talked about fitness partners before. The simple truth is some people enjoy working out on their own (I’m one of those) and some people really need and do better when they have a fitness partner to motivate and keep them focused. Now, truth be told, I’ve only had a fitness partner twice before. The longest partner was named Leslie and she and I worked out together for about 9 months. She was fantastic. She kept me on my toes, she challenged me to push a little further each time and she could make me laugh when I felt like … Continue reading
