Using Rewards as Motivation

Rewards are very motivating. When I used to work as a preschool teacher, I found it to be a great way to gain cooperation. I have used it as a mother and in a variety of other settings. Children aren’t the only ones however, who enjoy rewards. Adults love to be rewarded for hard work as well. A raise, an extra day off or a promotion are great ways of being rewarded in our careers. At home we might find a reward being the one who gets to pick the family movie. There are all different ways that rewards can … Continue reading

Is it Ever Ok to Bribe your Kids?

How do you get your children to do what you want them to? What do you do to encourage them to do certain things and to refrain from doing other things? Many parents have, at least sometimes, resorted to bribing their children. Is that necessarily a bad thing? Is it ever ok to bribe your kids? New findings reveal some interesting answers to these questions. First, it would be helpful to figure out what a bribe is (and what it isn’t). Author Ellen Perry points out that there is a continuum to be aware of. Motivation is one one end, … Continue reading

Staying Motivated

My biggest problem with freelance writing is staying motivated. Some days, the words just don’t come. When that happens I want to turn off the computer and go do something else. Being a freelancer I have the flexibility to do that but I’ve found that if I let myself walk away it’s harder to get back and easier to walk away the next time. So, I have to find ways to motivate myself. At first, I used rewards, just like I did with my daughter when she was younger, but then the combination of sitting at the computer and all … Continue reading

In a Workout Slump?

I know from experience that sometimes it is hard to stay motivated to exercise. I have gotten in slumps before that have lasted longer than I would like to admit! I have come up with some ideas to try to help you stay motivated and get moving. These ideas have helped me get out of a slump, and hopefully they can help you too! Workout Shoes Keep your workout shoes in sight! This may seem odd but there is some truth in the saying- out of sight, out of mind. I have noticed that when my workout shoes are tossed … Continue reading

Back in Black iPhone App

I love my iPhone. I haven’t made a secret about that. I think I’ve talked about it enough in my writing. There are so many things I can do with my phone. I know I got along just fine before I had a cell phone at all and then did just fine when I had a simple phone that’s only fun feature was voice dialing. Now I don’t know what I’d do without my iPhone and all its smart phone features. There are many things I can do on my phone to shop for deals and make sure I’m getting … Continue reading

Creating a Dream Board

One of the things I have been working on, in order to encourage and inspire me in my home business is what I call a “Dream Board.” Although my work is with freelance writing, I think any work you do would benefit from a “Dream Board.” You just need to tweak it to suit your type of home business. I am using a tri-fold display board, the kind you often see in science fairs at schools. But you can create a “Dream Board” using almost anything. A bulletin board, journal or your wall is just some ideas. The first thing … Continue reading

Why Should I Cut Coupons? Why Not?

Sometimes I have to remind myself to cut coupons. They do take a little bit of time to do, after all, and just the task of remembering to buy that newspaper or scout out extra coupons doesn’t seem to fit in with the day to day life. It is true that you can reduce the food budget without coupons, using careful shopping, buying in bulk and other methods. But some of the biggest savings can be had when you do use coupons and use them in the right way. Even basic coupon cutting can reduce the grocery bill by 30 … Continue reading

Give Away a Prize

Prizes and rewards motivate people. How many times have you bought a lottery ticket, entered a drawing or opened that container of soda to see if you were “a winner” by reading the cap? When it comes to motivating our children and using some of the tricks and tools of parenting, giving away a prize might be a tactic you can use. Like anything, prizes can be overused and lose their motivational magic, but the occasional prize or reward can be powerful. I found with my kids that just calling it a “prize” was fun. Since it was so different … Continue reading

Could a Point System Help Your Child with ADHD?

Experts are suggesting that parents of children with ADHD and other behavioral difficulties should try using a point (or credit) system for discipline and motivation. In a recent PEOPLE magazine article, I read about a special camp for children with ADHD run by Dr. Karen Fleiss. The camp gives points for good behaviors, and takes them away for less appropriate ones. Campers who achieve a certain number of points during the week are rewarded with a special Friday field trip. In the article, Dr. Fleiss says that the point system helps motivate these kids to choose the right behavior. With … Continue reading

The Pros of “Paying Yourself” in Coupon Savings

Did you catch yesterday’s article, Should You “Pay Yourself” in Coupon Savings? It introduced the concept of paying yourself with money that you save from clipping coupons and taking advantage of bonus card savings. I talked about what “paying yourself” means, as well as different ways of doing it. But, paying yourself with your coupon savings might not make sense for everyone. And so, I’m going to examine the ways in which it can be a positive practice, and then later, in another article, how it can actually negatively affect your frugal lifestyle. Wanting to start out on a positive … Continue reading
