Valentine's Day Ideas: Partner Yoga

I was excited to find out that my gym would be offering a Partner Yoga class the week of St. Valentine's Day. Basically, you can bring your significant other, a friend or be paired up when you get there, unless the class specifies "couples only." The main idea of partner yoga is to enjoy the regular poses from a new perspective. If you go with your significant other, then you'll be able to create closeness in a challenging, but fun way. Don't be scared away by preconceptions that anything risqué will occur; this is intimacy without the sexuality. If you're nervous about what you and your partner will be asked to do, then see if you can get a synopsis about the class ahead of time.

If you can find a Partner Yoga class in your area, then you might be able to go on a unique date with your Valentine. While everyone is going out for dinner and a movie, you might be able to say that you went for yoga and a dessert, or yoga and whatever you desire. The point is that you'll be sharing a new and memorable experience together. Getting your spouse to go may be a challenge, but if you can explain that it will be a change from the day-to-day date, then you might be able to convince them. Also, knowing what to expect can be persuasive. Many poses will be done using your partner's body weight for resistance or to maintain the pose. For example, Triangles might be done back to back. Seated poses like Boat can be more fun by putting feet or legs together. There are hundreds of variations that an instructor may use to make the yoga poses come alive in a refreshing way for beginner to advanced levels.

If you're interested, then make sure you sign up soon. Many Partner Yoga classes will be on a sign-up basis only, especially if they're not typically offered. Have fun and remember that neither of you have to be regular yogis to enjoy it.
