Winter’s the Best with Pets

Like much of the country, this week’s temperatures in Nashville have been very wintery indeed. Once upon a time I vowed never again to live in a climate that had winter. It could be a season in name only. (I grew up in Denver. I chose to go to college at the University of Arizona very much on purpose. It was (a) away from home, and (b) in a nice warm and sunny climate. No more snow!) I successfully managed to uphold my vow for 17 years. I lived in Tucson for five years, Phoenix for six, and Jacksonville, Florida, … Continue reading

Children’s Picture Books about The First Day of Winter

It’s the first official day of winter, although you wouldn’t know it by looking around here – we got hit hard this last weekend and it’s been winter around here ever since. The first book I’m reviewing is called, appropriately, “The First Day of Winter.” Written after the style of “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” we read about all the things that were given to our main character by his friend, but over ten days rather than twelve. I’ll spare you the buildup and skip to the grand finale, but you have to sing along with me. Ready? Take a … Continue reading

Snow Shoeing Tips for Beginners

I’ve only gone snow shoeing for fun once, though we did use them one winter where we lived because it was the easiest way to get out to the barn during the multiple blizzard type weather we had over one winter. Your Stride It’s important to remember when you are snow shoeing that you have to lengthen your stride. The natural stride for walking is not elongated and if you walk with … Continue reading

Whether you enjoy skiing or not, snow shoeing is worth checking out and what other way can you go walking in a beautiful winter wonderland while getting a good workout at a same time. Your body generates a great deal of body heat and will burn a great many calories during snow shoeing and you’ll discover that it’s far from a cold sport at all. One of the greatest boons of snow … Continue reading

What to do With Small Chunks of Alone Time

My last blog had some ways to get alone time, now that you have that time available, what are you supposed to do? Well, what you actually do is all dependent on your likes and dislikes, as well as exactly how much time you have. The number one thing you must do is take that time for yourself. I know it’s hard when you have that extra 15 minutes NOT to do an extra chore around the house, or get a jump on some work you need done, but you must resist that urge. You made this time for you … Continue reading

The Fitness Week in Review for December 16-22

It’s been a great week here, I know I say that every week and every week I mean it. The Fitness blog is growing and it’s developing and we’ve had over a year to get into this race and to enjoy the company of our fellows here. In coming weeks, you’ll get to share in Valorie Delp’s experiences as she dives into the 10,000 step program and we have Ed Paul who uses swimming to maintain his fitness and get back into shape. They are telling us their stories, what’s yours? Saturday, December 16 In Kid Fitness: Take Your Toddler … Continue reading
