Weightlifting to Alleviate Back Pain

Forget about paying $100 for a 60-minute massage; according to a new study you are better off lifting weights to ease lower back pain. Researchers from the University of Alberta say people who add weight training to their fitness regime experience less back pain than those who participate solely on other forms of exercise, such as tennis, jogging or biking. The study followed people suffering with chronic back pain as they participated in a 16-week exercise program. The participants were split into two groups. The first group completed resistance training using dumbbells, barbells and other load-bearing exercise equipment. The second … Continue reading

Helpful Health Information From My Health Insurer

Today, in the mail, I got something unexpected from my health insurance company. It wasn’t a bill, and it wasn’t a scary letter about cancellation. Instead, it was a helpful little pamphlet with advice about dealing with asthma. Part of the Affordable Care Act includes something called the medical loss ratio. It requires health insurance companies to spend at least 80% of the money that they get from customer’s health insurance premiums on things that actually can improve a person’s health. The insurer cannot include things like salaries, advertising costs, or other administrative costs in that 80%. One of the … Continue reading

Fitness and Your Bones

Men and women looking to avoid suffering the painful and often debilitating disease osteoporosis should be exercising more, according to leading scientists. Researchers at top medical universities around the nation are urging people to look after their bones by living well and getting fit. They say by doing so you can reduce your chances of developing osteoporosis, a disease where the inner honeycomb structure inside each bone becomes thinner and more fragile. Osteoporosis can affect any part of a person’s body but the wrist, hip and spine are the most common areas. Experts say the best way to strengthen your … Continue reading

ACOG Guidelines for Exercise

Most medical professionals agree that exercise during pregnancy is beneficial for otherwise healthy women. The ACOG suggests various forms of exercise, including swimming, bicycling and weight bearing exercise. If a woman is healthy, she can often exercise at the same level of intensity as she did prior to pregnancy. The duration and intensity will vary from woman to woman and often depends on the fitness level prior to pregnancy. Active women … Continue reading

Aquatic Exercise for Arthritis

A workout in the water has been a popular treatment for people with arthritis for the past twenty-five years or so. Why? Because a water workout can help improve flexibility, relieve pain, ease stiffness, and increase range of motion — without impact on affected joints. Benefits of a workout in the water: Age is no barrier. As long as you can float (and there are floatation belts to help you out) you can manage a water workout. Physical condition is no barrier. You don’t have to be able to walk or stand unassisted (again, those floatation belts come in handy) … Continue reading

Body for Life Day #10 Training: Upper Body

You’re in the second week of the Body for Life Challenge and you’ve done a bit of weight training already. Chances are, you’ve also felt a bit of soreness. Before you get concerned, that is a good thing. Generally the day after you do weight bearing exercises (weight training, lifting), you’ll feel some soreness in the muscles that you used the previous day. This soreness is an indication that you have challenged your muscles to grow and they are meeting the challenge. Now, if you wake up completely unable to move then you used entirely too much weight and deserve … Continue reading

Tip of the Day- Take the Stairs

If you were to visit my home you’d notice something. Well, something other than the total disarray and the dishes in the sink. I make little piles of things on the stairs of my home. Little piles of things to go up the next time I have to go up. Little piles of things to go down the next time I go down. Some days this goes down in my book as time and labor saving. I cluster things together instead of distracting myself from the task at hand. Believe me; I’m easily distracted, especially when it comes to housework. … Continue reading

Your Body & Aging

When we talk about fitness, we talk about keeping the body and the mind in great health. When we’re teenagers, we seem like such natural health nuts because being healthy seems to come naturally. So why is it, that aging means we have to work harder or perform harder to get in our best shape? Why don’t we bounce back as easily as we once did? Why is it the five pounds that fell off of us when we didn’t eat for a couple of days, clings stubbornly the rest of the time? We’re Aging – That’s Why There are … Continue reading
