Save Money through Repurposing

Everyone is looking to save money these days. We tend to not be so quick to throw something out because you just never know when it might come in handy. Well let me introduce you to the idea of repurposing, which is similar to recycling. The difference is that you are extending the life of something and finding a new way to use it. This sometimes requires making some changes to the item, such as cleaning or painting it. Other times you are using it in its original form, however, in a brand new way. Think of it this way. … Continue reading

Reusing Household Items- Aluminum Foil

Today though I’m looking at ways to recycle, as usual. I can’t stand the amount of waste that is generated so I’m doing everything I can to reduce it. Right now I’m down to putting out the garbage cans only once a month, I would like to do even better. There are some families that have almost zero waste, I don’t know if that is achievable for me, but I’d like to try. Did you know it will take 400 years for aluminum foil to break down in a landfill? I’ve always tried to reuse aluminum foil. I will wash … Continue reading

It’s A Never Ending Job

Walking in the door from work today I was sorting the mail, junk, bills, recycling, Kohl’s coupons. I let the dog out and emptied my lunch bag, trash in the trash can, dishes in the sink to wash later. I ran upstairs to use the restroom (over sharing, I know) while in there I noticed the toilet paper roll holder needed dusting, so I dusted it. I washed my hands and wiped the sink off, grabbed the towels from yesterday and threw them in the laundry. As I moved through the house doing all the things I do when I … Continue reading

Worrying Too Much

I know I’m constantly railing against letting the often-inaccurate media have too much influence over our marriages and our approaches to romance. One of the reasons why I harp on about it so much is because I’m talking to myself as much, if not more, than I am to others. I’m a worrywart; it’s one of my least favorite facets of my personality but one I know I have to acknowledge and for which I have to watch out. There’s little that I can’t manage to fret over, and whether or not I’m going about my relationship with my husband … Continue reading

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

I’m a bit of a recycling nerd. I like to feel like I’m doing my part, I haven’t quite figured out how to reduce the amount of trash we generate so I’m trying to recycle and reuse as much of it as possible. Sometimes this simply means looking at things in a different way. There are many things we toss every day that can help us keep our homes a little tidier. The first one being paper towel and toilet paper tubes. How many of these does your family go through in a week? Start saving them, they have many … Continue reading

Fall Science: Combing Through Compost

It’s almost fall, which means that the season of quiet recycling is upon us. Why do I get so excited about this season? I love the fact that there is a time when plants and animals start to go to sleep and when plants prepare for the winter by sending many of their parts for recycling. When the deciduous trees drop their leaves, that’s a boon for many soil-dwelling animals that rely on leaves for food and homes. You can explore the plants’ recycling process at any time of the year by combing through finished or almost-finished compost. Gross! Yuck! … Continue reading

Back-to-School Green

It’s that time of year – chances are your youngins’ have started back to school. I’ve done blogs in the past on how to be green with school kids, but let’s do a quick review. Here are some questions you may want to ask your school: Do they recycle? If so, there should be bins labeled for paper, cans, and cardboard. What are the teachers teaching? Going green is becoming a bigger part of education, so don’t hesitate to ask your child’s teacher what she is doing as far as a green education. Don’t be afraid to suggest green projects … Continue reading

Soil: The Foundation of Your Garden’s Immunity

You hear the talk about probiotics, vitamin c, and vitamin d. You may even take some of these yourself to boost your own immunity. Did you know that your soil is the immune system of your garden? What are you doing to build that up? If I had to choose one thing in your garden that helps your garden grow silently and sturdily, that would be your soil. Soil is where your garden plants get their nutrients and water. Just like your own immune system it’s also full of microorganisms, and so it should be. Small bacteria, fungi, and animals … Continue reading

How Green Are You?

We hear a lot in the media about what we should and should be doing in our homes. Governments are trying to get people to do the right thing. They are always trying to encourage recycling and composting. The Australian government has offered rebates for getting insulation, or solar hot water, or solar panels – all ideas aimed at helping the environment. So here are some questions for you. 1. How often do you take reusable bags instead of getting plastic bags at the supermarket or for other shopping? We try and do this, so we also keep reusable bags … Continue reading

How Green is Your Home Based Business?

You may be tempted to think that you are doing your fair share to help the planet by working from home because you do not have to commute to get to your workplace every day. While it is true that you may be driving less than people who work outside the home, ditching the daily commute is not the only action that you can take to do right by the environment. One way in which you can minimize your environmental impact while working from home is to be mindful of electricity and heating/cooling system usage. Are you heating the whole … Continue reading
