What is a Kettle Ball?

Have you ever seen a kettle ball? Have you heard of one? It’s a new twist on a very old technique in the fitness world. Russian power lifters used a similar device for nearly a century and you’ve likely seen the large, silver object with the handgrip on the top. Well, you have the right idea. The kettle ball itself looks like a cannon ball with a purse strap on the top. The kettle ball’s design requires that you use your entire body in the lifting of it – unlike hand weights that isolate muscles – the kettle ball requires … Continue reading

Zeroing Down the Entertainment Budget

When money is tight in my household, paying for entertainment is one of the first areas of the budget to go. Convincing my family, on the other hand, can be a little tough, so while we do make some allowances (we still haven’t completely gotten rid of cable), it takes a lot of creativity to keep everyone entertained for as close to zero as possible. Finding fun alternatives to eating out Part of the pleasure of eating out is the entertainment factor, so we try to include that even with home cooked meals. For example, I might make a salad, … Continue reading

Tan Mom vs. Snooki

Only in America… Forget the showdown featuring working versus stay-at-home moms; that’s so 2008. The latest battle on the mommy war front pits Tan Mom in one corner and reality TV mom-to-be Snooki in the other. It’s a fake bake smackdown… and it’s giving motherhood a bad name. And by motherhood I mean humanity. For those of you too busy raising your own kids to keep track of the war of words brewing between these two immature anti-role models, allow me to get you up to speed: Patricia “Tan Mom” Krentcil is the 44-year-old New Jersey mom, who recently made … Continue reading

Fitness Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day

With Mother’s Day around the corner, it might be the perfect time to give her the gift of health. Why not encourage her in the way of fitness? Of course, you have to be careful about this. You don’t want to hurt feelings. In fact, it’s probably a good idea to only give a fitness gift if your mother truly has a desire to make changes in her life or has already started to exercise. One of the best gifts you can give is a pedometer. It’s a great way to keep track of your steps and set goals. If … Continue reading

What’s on Your Child’s Christmas Gift List?

The Salvation Army’s red kettles have been out since before Halloween, the bell ringers got to work last Friday and some guy is selling Christmas trees across the street from our church. I guess that means I should be done with my holiday shopping, right? A year ago this week I was in desperation mode trying to track down a bunch of motorized rodents—-a.k.a. Zhu Zhu Pets-—to put under the Christmas tree for my kindergartener. This year Zhu Zhus are passe and Zoobles are all the rage. For the blissfully unaware, Zoobles are brightly colored creatures that fold into balls … Continue reading

Encouraging To Serve

In our house, serving others and the community was always a big thing. I wanted to raise an unselfish person who believed in giving to others. as this was my Christian belief. As part of our weekly activities, we served in several different ways throughout the years. We took part in several community walks to raise monies for various organizations. Some of which included health issues such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, as well as issues that involved our environment. We also volunteered quite a bit with animal issues. Since we were both big animal lovers this was especially fun. … Continue reading

My Lifestyle Journey (Week Seven)

My life has been a whirlwind for the past month. Although I have not experienced any additional weight loss, I have managed to maintain, which makes me very happy. I have also been more faithful about exercising routinely. I visited my doctor a couple of weeks ago. I asked her what is the best way to lose weight at this stage of my life (40+). She said that if she knew she would be skinny. I told her that I have been dieting and exercising and that my weight is still not budging. I do, however, feel stronger, more muscular, … Continue reading

Dressing A Daughter’s Room 5

When we last left off, I was talking about the great fabrics that I poked through at an Amish-owned fabric shop in Lancaster, Pa. I was looking for the perfect fabric for my little girl’s room. I wanted something that was current, fresh, fun and would grow with my daughter as she did. To remind you, the fabric choices were: a delicate variegated pink rose pattern, pink outlined flowers on a white background and its opposite white outlines flowers on a pink background, a thin candy strip with two different pink stripes and a white stripe, and an an oddball, … Continue reading

Five Quick Cleaning Tips

To me, there are few things better than good cleaning tips to help get chores completed in a quicker and easier way. I’d much rather be do something else -anything else- than cleaning. With that in mind, I’m always on the lookout for tips to share. Filter the Dirt Did you know that a clean, paper coffee filter makes a great cleaning cloth? It’s nealy lint free so it works great on mirrors, windows, other glass surfaces, and even shiny chrome or stainless steal. Try it. Add some Salt When you’re in a pinch, try a pinch of salt. Just … Continue reading
