Banning Skinny People

Skinny person discrimination? Didn’t know there could be such a thing until I read a story about a gym in Canada that has actually banned skinny people from entering. In fact, you must be plus-sized in order to workout, the rules set forth by the gym’s owner at “Body Exchange” in Vancouver. Hmmm…I sense the possibility of a trend starting here. Now I have to admit, there may be something to this. I know that for some people, going to a fitness center can be really intimidating. Especially when you walk in and everyone in sight looks fit and toned. … Continue reading

Have You Supersized Your Expectations?

Go into any fast food drive through and you will be asked if you want to “supersize” your order, to get just a little bit more than what you were originally expecting. The problem is that those supersized meals can lead to fat belly and a skinny wallet. When we want to save money or live within our means, we talk a lot about the opposite, downsizing. This could be anything from cutting back on the number of times per week that we eat out to moving into a smaller home. Downsizing things can certainly save money. But, if you … Continue reading

Cleaning Out Your Backpack

After going through a divorce it is easy to get bogged down with negativity. We begin filling our backpacks with rock after rock after rock and before long, the weight on our shoulders is keeping us from moving forward and climbing the mountains before us. When I was going through my divorce my self-esteem was at an all time low. Every morning I would look in the mirror and start piling the rocks in my backpack. “Nobody is going to want me now.” Clunk! “I’m not pretty enough.” Clunk! “I’m not skinny enough.” Clunk! “I couldn’t keep my marriage together. … Continue reading

Are You Giving Your Kids the Kiss of Death?

I am more J.Crew than JLo or JWoww. I prefer khakis to skinny jeans and respectable cardigans to revealing camisoles. And that goes double for cosmetics. If it were not for the fact that I have skin like a Shar-Pei and a daughter that I am forced not to embarrass in public, I would probably go without make-up every. single. day. While I am far from a Japanese Kabuki actor, I do apply some foundation, mascara and eyeliner on days I am required to venture beyond my driveway. If I forget to add one or more of the aforementioned cosmetics … Continue reading

Mercedes-Benz Brings Facebook to Your Dashboard

Mercedes-Benz USA is about to unveil a special version of their luxury cars. This new model will have a small screen on the dashboard that will allow the driver to access a simplified version of Facebook. I cannot imagine that auto insurance companies are going to look favorably upon this idea. The new Mercedes will come with an in-vehicle telematics system. It includes one of those “intelligent screens” that have started appearing in many new cars and trucks. At least some of those screens allow people who are inside a vehicle to use the screen to access the internet. There … Continue reading

Would You Be Happier to Be Thinner Than Your Spouse?

Would you be happier if you were thinner than your spouse? I recently read in “Health News” that a new study from the University of Tennessee found that women who had a lower body mass index (BMI) than their husband in the first few years of marriage were much more satisfied. What they discovered is that it really had less to do with how skinny the wife was and more to do with her BMI. They apparently followed 169 couples, from the beginning of their marriages through the next four years. Men were also more satisfied when they had lower … Continue reading

My Best Advice: Choose Your Battles

If I were allowed to give one only bit of advice to parents who have young children or children on the verge of becoming teenagers, I would tell them this…choose your battles. There is honestly no better advice than this. When our children are younger, we tend to have two schools of thought when it comes to how the teen years will play out. Either we dread it and assume it will be nothing but trouble or we believe that we will never have trouble because we are going to be the kind of parents who lay down the law. … Continue reading

What Would You Do to Be Skinny?

What would you do to be skinny? Well according to a survey done by Fitness magazine, 51% of the 2,400 women asked would give up sex for an entire year in exchange for being skinny. So is this an indication of a true lack of interest in sex or does it go deeper than that? Could it really be that women value a skinny body so much so that they would give up intimacy with another? Sadly, many women equate happiness with weight loss. “If only I could lose this extra weight, then I would be happy.” Yet time and … Continue reading

Who is Poisoning Your Diet?

For those struggling with weight and desperately trying to shed pounds it is important to have the right attitude. As with most tasks the proper outlook makes a difficult task a little easier. As unfair as it may seem gaining weight is far easier than losing weight. In droves dieters don a sunny disposition, the latest headbands and sports gear, grab a sports drink and sweat to the oldies in an attempt to shed extra pounds. This works for some time until reality smacks them in the face like a burger hitting the grill when all the sweat accumulated into … Continue reading

Do You Have a Mommy Uniform?

What do you wear to drop off your kids at school in the morning? Is it the same outfit you wear to the supermarket, the pet store or the gas station? I tend to dress in the same outfit to do all of the aforementioned tasks—-jeans or khakis with a plain button-down shirt or sweater. My wardrobe is simple, easy to clean, and yes, rather boring. However, at least it won’t get me banned from stores. In England, a couple of grocery stores are cracking down on moms who shop in slumpy, dumpy outfits that resemble nightwear. You know exactly … Continue reading
