Squeezing in Exercise When You Sit All Day

Sitting all day long is not good for your health. So if you work in an office or any type of job where you are sitting for long periods of time, you will need to get creative. Since I work from home, spending several hours most days of the week writing, it can be very easy to get comfortable and stay comfortable. I used to workout before I started my assignments. I figured it was better to get it out of the way but now I have changed things up. I try to get in 30 to 40 minutes of … Continue reading

Motivation to Exercise

I have never been much of an exerciser. I went for runs with my college roommates but that only lasted a couple weeks. I made good use of the treadmill in the basement in the last few weeks preceding my wedding. I took a Pilate class for a month just to get out of the house while my husband spent late nights at rehearsals during graduate school. I never stuck with anything I tried and I never really cared. Sure I needed to get fit and tone my pathetically weak muscles, but the motivation just wasn’t there. That all changed … Continue reading

Underneath It All: What to Wear Underneath Your Exercise Outfit

When you made the decision to establish an exercise routine for yourself you probably gave a great deal of thought as to just how you were going to go about it. You might have decided on an exercise plan that involved some type of exercise equipment. You may have contemplated using some kind of exercising DVDs to use in your workout. You may have even decided to venture out to a gym and purchased a gym membership. If you were going to be working out at home you probably did not give much thought as to what you would be … Continue reading

High Tech Video Workouts

There are thousands of fitness videos on the market today from Denise Austin and Karen Voight to Mari Winsor and Crunch Fitness, but a new study shows that sales of exercise DVDs have declined in the last three years as more fitness buffs turn to the Internet to get buff. According to the study, an increasing number of exercisers are no longer purchasing a new fitness DVD each month. Rather they are streaming fitness videos from Netflix and other sources to their televisions and computer monitors. Among the most popular are online workouts from “The Biggest Loser’s” Jillian Michaels and … Continue reading

Finding Time to Exercise

I know what you are thinking—-you can barely find time to take a shower and brush your teeth, so how can you possibly find time to fulfill the government’s recommendation of exercising five days a week? Fitness experts suggest exercising less, but with more intensity. Basically, if you can’t devote five days a week to exercise then train three days, but pick up the pace during those sessions. For example, if your fitness routine includes using a treadmill or stationary bike run or pedal at your normal pace, then pick up the pace for five minutes before easing off for … Continue reading

Exercise and Music

What kind of music do you listen to while you workout? A new study says the type of tunes that play on your iPod as you run (or participate in other cardio exercise) influences your physical endurance. The new research, which is set to appear in the Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology, is part of a 20-year study highlighting motivational qualities of music in sport and exercise. The findings illustrate the benefits associated with exercising in time to music. In one part of the study 30 participants exercised on a treadmill while listening to songs by pop stars such … Continue reading

Why Too Much Exercise is a Bad Thing

Believe it or not there is such a thing as getting too much exercise. People who are obsessed with physical activity are often diagnosed with a condition known as obligatory exercise and anorexia athletica. The results of such behavior can cause physical and psychological harm in a number of ways, including: INJURY Studies show excessive exercise can damage tendons, ligaments, bones, cartilage, and joints. In addition, when minor injuries aren’t allowed to heal, they often result in long-term damage. Too much exercise actually destroys muscle mass, instead of building it up, especially if the body isn’t getting enough nutrition and … Continue reading

Sometimes You Just Can’t Make The Time to Exercise

I always try to be positive about weight loss efforts and, like most people who do exercise, I have the mindset that I need to make time to exercise. I’ve held this mindset for quite some time and really beaten myself up over it. Now I am finally admitting it. Sometimes you just can’t make that time to exercise. If you regularly read this blog, you know that I had a baby four months ago and you may also know that I have a pre-schooler at home as well. My plan was to get back to the gym six weeks … Continue reading

Gastric Banding Sucks

Let me qualify that statement before I go any further. In 2001, I had a gastric bypass. That procedure involves stapling off most of the stomach pouch so that you end up with a stomach the size of a shot glass. You eat less food, suffer serious side effects when you eat greasy or sugary foods and thereby lose a lot of weight. With the help of a good diet and regular exercise, I lost 90 pounds. A couple friends of mine have since had the same procedure and lost a great deal of weight. None of us suffered from … Continue reading

Muscle Memory & Your Workout

Do you have a problem with muscle memory? I’ve heard from a lot of people who complain about their workout stalling and where once they got results, they don’t anymore. This is called a plateau and you have to find a way to get off that if you want to keep getting results. Muscle memory is another way of defining being on a plateau. The problem with muscle memory is that it’s your body’s natural way of coping. It’s essential. We use muscle memory every single day and we have to because our neuromuscular system has to adapt to the … Continue reading
