Yoga for Dummies - DVD Review

by Heather Long | More from this Blogger

Yoga for Dummies is a designed to provide balanced workout for the mind and the body. These exercises can all be found in Basic Yoga Workout for Dummies For someone who has never practiced yoga, this is a great beginning DVD for first timers. The host is named Sara Ivanhoe. She teaches what she calls the daily dozen. These are 12 basic poses including some challenges and modifications.

Ivanhoe has a very approachable voice and a calming manner. She offers the concepts and information along with the jargon in a manner that is ideal for introduction to yoga. However, those experienced in yoga may find the information redundant and the very thorough explanations a little too long winded.

Yoga 1

The attention to detail pays off as students of yoga learn about the importance of posture and the proper alignment of the body. It is an extremely safe and effective set of programs that really makes yoga accessible. While I enjoy yoga immensely as a flexibility workout, this DVD is not really on par with my familiarity levels. Although, I have to admit, I have a better understanding of positions like downward dog and mountain pose.

If you're interested in taking a yoga class, but lack the funds or the time to take one at a yoga center - this might be the best investment for you. There is little to no spiritual information offered on this yoga instructional. It's strictly oriented towards physical fitness and correct form.

The DVD also offers a more intermediate course for students who feel as though they have graduated from the beginning program. The intermediate course features 9 poses and helps to build personal confidence. Yoga For Dummies is a worthy investment for first timers or novice yoga practitioners and makes a really good gift idea for that friend who always said they wanted to try it, but were uncertain of where to begin.
