Setting A Better Example

It’s exhausting sometimes having to be the only one setting an example for my child. I don’t always do a great job and I know that. We are all human with our own weaknesses, usually there are two parents to help even things out. He is strong where you are weak and vice versa. When you are a single parent you are going it alone. Hailey’s dad has been more influential by being a bad example and I have to say that I’m grateful for that. He struggled for years with drug addiction and knowing that her father doesn’t remember … Continue reading

Your Family Health History Does Not Have To Repeat Itself

Knowing your family health history can help you to take better care of yourself. Learning about what illnesses have affected members of your family can alert you to health risks that people in your family are particularly susceptible to. This is good knowledge to have for yourself, and it is valuable information that you should share with your doctor. By talking about your family health history with your doctor, you give your doctor information that helps him or her to assess your health in a big-picture sort of way. For example, that skin-colored bump above your ear normally would not … Continue reading

Managing Your Energy Levels During Pregnancy

Halfway through our hike around Devil’s Lake in Wisconsin’s scenic state park of the same name, I was ready to pick a bench and crash. I had hiked this trail many times before, but this time I simply did not have the energy to finish. While the rest of my group finished the trek up the hill and over the boulders, I headed back to the campsite with my husband and passed out in the tent for two hours. Several times during our camping trip, I stumbled to the tent and fell asleep, napping for 2-3 hours at a time. … Continue reading

Managing Asthma in Cold Weather

Trying to exercise in cold weather (that includes shoveling snow!) can trigger problems if you suffer from asthma. Experts believe that the cold, dry air of winter can irritate airways, causing the bronchial tubes to narrow. This can restrict airflow into your lungs! Adding exercise to the mix — your body’s breathing patterns change when you’re working out — can put even more strain on your lungs. For a person without asthma, exercise in cold weather may not be an issue. But for a person with asthma, you could be looking at an asthma attack. You may experience coughing (especially … Continue reading

Confessions of a Foodie Mom, Week Two: Countering My Top Ten Sabotaging Thoughts

I’ll bite the bullet by putting the news up front: I am exactly the same weight today as I was last Saturday. At one point in the week I was down a pound; now I’m not. I do realize that fluctuations of two or three pounds can be water weight. So I guess I should be glad I haven’t gained. But I know I can do better. I mentioned last week that I was in a group this past spring that used the principles of Cognitive Therapy. Cognitive therapy is usually short-term counseling focused on helping people to reframe the … Continue reading

Salvaging Damaged Hair

How healthy is your hair? Are you free from frizz and split ends? Is your hair shiny and smooth, or dull and unmanageable? If your hair is damaged — be it from chemicals (like pool chlorine), over-processing (like hair dye or perms), heat (like the sun or hair dryers), or something else entirely — here are some tips to help get your locks back into shape. Get on a regular schedule for trims. If your hair is in really bad shape, you may want to deal with the dead ends once a month; most healthy hair can go longer without … Continue reading

Is Birth Control Sabotaging Your Fitness Goals?

If you are using oral birth control, it may be, without you even realizing it. A new study found that oral contraceptive use impairs muscle gains in young women, and is associated with lower hormone levels. That’s a shocking find, especially for active young women, who are looking to improve their fitness performance while taking oral birth control. Researchers at Texas A&M University and the University of Pittsburgh studied 73 healthy women between the ages of 18-31 for 10 weeks. During the study the women were broken up into two groups and completed whole-body resistance exercise training. The first group … Continue reading

Dogs and Cats Living Together: Body Language

Dogs and cats may not always get along, but it seems they CAN learn to understand each other. Researchers from Tel Aviv University in Israel took a good long look at canines and felines who share a household. Taken individually, canine and feline body language often has opposite meanings. For example, a dog with his ears back or stretching out on his back is relaxed and even submissive. In cat speak, those behaviors are actually signs of aggression. But when the two species take up residence together, researchers have seen cats and dogs adapting their language. Dogs often greet other … Continue reading
